The Irish Institute of Orthopaedic Surgeons was formed in 1972. Its functions included determining the need for new orthopaedic appointments, involvement in the replacement of those retiring, and a commitment to develop a training program in line with that being established in the UK under the auspices of the Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) of the Joint Committee of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons.

There has been a significant demographic expansion particularly in Cavan, Monaghan, Meath and Louth in recent years. The Regional Orthopaedic Department now provides a musculoskeletal service to a population that exceeds 500,000. The additional post will contribute to improving the Consultant to patient ratio and with additional international expertise, will enhance the overall Orthopaedic service. The assignment will be based and split in the locations below; Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Our Lady’s Hospital Navan.
